Broccoli Omelet with Home Fries and Rye Toast - Scotty's Breakfast - North Haven, CT |
When I visit my family in Connecticut, I know I can always count on being well-fed. In fact, my parents have perfected the art of making breakfast in their house. The
Keurig is always ready to brew coffee, and I'm usually spoiled with my choice of meals to start the day -- a super tasty breakfast sandwich made with an egg, cheese, and crispy bacon courtesy of my stepmother or a plate of subtly sweet waffles courtesy of my father. If I'm really, really good, then I'll get both.
Like I said, I'm spoiled.

In fact, my parents enjoy cooking breakfast so much, it's hard selling them on the idea of taking a morning off to go out to eat. Every now and then, though, I'm able to convince them to have someone else do the cooking for once.
When we do go out, our local diner is a favorite choice since it's not too far from my parents' house and they serve a side of nostalgia along with their pancakes and eggs. Last fall, though, they brought me to a new place --
Scotty's Breakfast -- to see whether their omelets really were "the best in town".

As soon as I walked into the restaurant, a huge smile spread across my face as my eyes began to spot Red Sox memorabilia in every corner and on every wall. Of course, the most noticeable tribute to my favorite baseball team was just inside the doorway -- a large mural of Fenway Park. I almost didn't care what the food tasted like because I was so smitten over the decor.

Broccoli Omelet with Home Fries and Rye Toast - Scotty's Breakfast - North Haven, CT |
Scotty's Breakfast is a completely casual, come-as-you-are, family-friendly restaurant. When we arrived, we were instructed to "sit wherever", so we chose a table right in the middle of the restaurant so we could be at the center of the action. We pored over the items on the
menu but couldn't ignore the call of the omelets, and all of us ordered the specialty of the house.
I took advantage of the
Create-Your-Own ($7.00) option and added broccoli, mushrooms, and American cheese to my omelet. Despite the lack of meat, the three-egg omelet and added vegetables made a hearty breakfast, even before the factoring in the included home fries (left on the grill until they were nice and crispy, thank-you-very-much) and side of rye toast.
With my bottomless cup of coffee, I'd say this was a
great deal for breakfast. The eggs were cooked a tad longer than I like them, but the broccoli retained a little crunch and the mushrooms added the perfect amount of earthiness. I can't say that I've tried
every omelet in town to know whether
Scotty's Breakfast really does serve the best around, but I enjoyed my meal immensely and hope I can convince my parents for a return trip the next time I'm home.
*AHEM*
